Dimply Pear Cake

This week's TWD recipe was Dimply Plum Cake; however, I used plums in my Summer Fruit Galette and really didn't care for them. So, thanks to my friend Peggy of Pantry Revisited, I made a Dimply Pear Cake. Thank you for this beautiful brain child, Madge! (I know, I know, Madge is not a nickname for Peggy.....I just enjoy harassing you.....Madge). I digress. I worked late on Monday night - which is usually when I find myself cooking my TWD recipe. I am quite a procrastinator. Every week I tell myself I'm going to do better, but as any good procrastinator would, I tell myself I'll just do better starting next week. Anywho, I worked late and got home and was able to whip this bad boy into shape and pop it into the oven in no time. Perfect for the girl on the go!! I used canned pear halves. I think fresh pears may have cooked better - these may have been entirely too juicy. I also used cinnamon as my spice. And lots of it. After it cooked I just set it on the oven and left it alone until today. I took it to work and cut into it and realized that it was not even cooked. About an inch all around the edges was cooked correctly, but the rest was pretty much batter. I still sat at my desk and ate half of it though. WHAT. EV. ER. It's flavor got good reviews though, regardless of it being undercooked. I have discovered that hungry, over-worked, over-stressed people have generally easy-to-please palettes. I think I would make it again. I'll just make sure it's thoroughly cooked next time. My secretary Karen (what up, girl?) suggested that it would taste good with thinly sliced apples on top. I agree. The cinnamon really does wonders for this recipe. And it made my kitchen smell beautiful.

Next week is Creme Brulee - but I will have to opt for a rewind instead as I refuse to purchase a butane torch. And I refuse to eat Creme Brulee without torched sugar. AS IF.

You tell 'em, no torch, no brulee. I'm thinking of a rewind also. That broiler thing was making me nervous. Sorry your cake was under-done, but at least it got rave reviews anyway. Hang on to those taste testers!

Julie, I know that you know who says that are supposed to cancel ALL of our plans for the rest of the week, but I had planned to jump over to your blog today and tell you that I LOVED your pear & cinnamon cake. And look, I have gone forward with those plans.

Julie Boolie, I'm glad you used the pears. And it was good, I can attest to that! Maybe a bit undercooked in the middle. Lots of TWD'ers seem to have had that problem. Mine cooked perfect in 40 min. so not sure . . maybe a difference in oven temperatures? I should have brought you a piece of mine to share, but I'm a food hog.

And more from Madge - I'm rewinding next week myself. No torch so no brulee. Plus I do not care for creme brulee. I know. . I'm the only person on earth that feels that way!

Pear sounds wonderful. I'm considering a rewind too, although I almost want an excuse to buy a torch...

I haven't decided on a rewind or use the torch (it is on order) I will make up my mind at the last minute just like any procrastinator! Pears were such a good choice!

the rewind option sounds good though. Good effort on the dimply cake though. Try sliced fresh pears next time. Think they will fit in perfectly with those spices.

Julie, I left you the following comment on my blog (can this be sort of like a "doctor's note" to excuse you from baking this week?):

To Julie (of peanutbutterandjulie.blogspot.com fame) - I should have noted in my post that the only reason that you weren't in the breakroom loading torches with us at midnight is because YOU WERE ACTUALLY DOING REAL WORK at the time, and that the only reason that you did not bake this week is because you were in the office from 7:30 a.m. on Sunday until approximately noon on Monday. In light of that, had you made the creme brulee, you would have officially crossed the TWD freak line. Good job staying on the right side of the line . . . for now.
